Liberica ( Coffea liberica )

Liberica ( Coffea liberica ) is a plant of the genus coffee plants ( Coffea ) from the family of Rubiaceae ( Rubiaceae ). The natural range of the species is located in the lowlands of West Africa, the species is however also grown in Southeast Asia.

Features

Coffea liberica achieved during undisturbed growth as vigorous shrub to medium sized tree up to a height of 20 meters. The leaves are elongated - ovate to elliptic, pointed, and leathery. They are up to 35 cm long and 15 cm wide and carry 6 to 13 cross- veins. The leaf margin is slightly wavy. The stipules are 2 to 4 mm short and triangular to ovate. The five - (up to nine ) zähligen flowers are in axillary clusters. The red when ripe stone fruit is 1-2 cm long and is spread by birds, bats or rodents.

Use

Liberica coffee is compared to the types of Robusta and Arabica of minor economic importance. One of the growing areas include Liberia, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic, Benin, the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Libericafrüchte are compared to Arabica or Robusta harder, juice -free, contain less sugar, and more caffeine. Therefore, the beans are considered to be comparatively inferior. Liberica also required in addition to the Excelsa coffee ( Coffea liberica var dewevrei ) the longest maturing 12-14 months. However, the variety is considered highly resistant to parasites and is superior to both Arabica and Robusta in production volume and durability.
