The Coliban River is a river in the middle of the Australian state of Victoria. It is used to supply water to the towns and settlements in its vicinity.

River

The source is located in Lyon Ville on the Great Dividing Range. After a few kilometers of the river over the Trentham Falls plunges 33 meters after untern and flows through three reservoirs, the Upper Coliban Reservoir, the Lauriston Reservoir and the Malmsbury Reservoir. At the outlet of the latter the small town of Malmsbury, from where the Coliban River continues its course to the north lies. It flows through the small town of Metcalfe and pours further north into Lake Eppalock and thus into the Campaspe River.

Use

1858 gold was found in the river and its water was used to supply the mining towns Bendigo and Castlemaine. With the local population growth was, in time, a better water supply needs, and so they built 70 km tunnels and aqueducts. Later, Kyneton and many other smaller towns and settlements in the region were connected to this water supply. Today, it serves more than 200,000 residents with drinking water.

Fauna and Flora

In the river you will find the platypus, as well as eight native fish species, including Macquaria australasica ( engl. Macquarie perch, " Macquariebarsch " ) from the family of cod perch. Four of these species are threatened with extinction, the species belonging to the same family Maccullochella applies threatened macquariensis ( trout cod, " trout pout " ) as special and you do not know whether it is really still to be found in the Coliban River. The native vegetation consists mainly of the eucalyptus species Eucalyptus aggregata ( black gum ), a tree that was once common to find, but today due to many years of deforestation is rather rare.

Management

Coliban Water operates the three reservoirs on the river, are part of the Eppalock Proclaimed Water Supply Catchment.
