Collective security#Collective defense

A military alliance ( formerly assistance pact ) is a closed between different states alliance with the purpose of military to cooperate. If it involves an intervention in favor of the attacked by another State party, but for offensive warfare is not an obligation, it is called also a defense alliance, defensive alliance, colloquially and for propaganda purposes as well as brothers in arms (obsolete even offensive and defensive alliance ).

The largest military alliance in the world is the NATO (Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization - North Atlantic Treaty Organization ). Its headquarters is in Brussels, the military headquarters are the SHAPE ( Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers in Europe) in Belgium and ACT ( Allied Command Transformation ) in Norfolk, Virginia, USA.

  • NATO in North America and Europe (since 1949 )
  • European Union ( mutual assistance clause in the common security and defense policy since the Treaty of Lisbon 2009 )
  • CSTO in Europe and Asia (since 2002), security partnership of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), see also: Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO )
  • GUAM alliance between Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova
  • ANZUS Pact between Australia, New Zealand and the USA (since 1951)
  • ANZUK Pact between Australia, New Zealand, UK, Malaysia and Singapore ( since 1971 )
  • Inter-American Treaty Organization ( Rio Treaty ) (since 1947)
  • Arab League ( since 1945 ), by supplementary agreement, a collective defense pact in 1950 was completed, but to date no effect
  • Gulf Cooperation with Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman
