Colm Tóibín

Colm Tóibín [ kɔl̪ ˠ əm ˠ T ˠ o ː b ʲ i ː n ʲ ] (* May 30, 1955 in Enniscorthy, County Wexford ) is an Irish author, journalist and literary critic.

Life

Tóibín went to school at St Peter 's College in Wexford. He then attended the University College Dublin and graduated in 1975. He then moved his residence and moved to Barcelona. Tóibíns first novel, The South was inspired by his time in Barcelona; as his work Homage to Barcelona from the year 1990.

1978 Tóibín returned back to Ireland, where he again began a master's program. However, he broke it and began a professional career as a journalist. From the early 1980s until 1985 Tóibín worked for the magazine " Magill ".

After his first novel, The South in the early 1990s Tóibín wrote in 1992 as a second novel, The Heather Blazing. This was followed in 1996 the novel The Story of the Night and 1999 the novel The Blackwater Lightship. The fifth novel by Tóibín The Master of 2004 deals with the life story of the writer Henry James. 2006 Tóibín published a first collection of short stories entitled Mothers and Sons (Eng. 2009: Mothers and sons ).

Tóibín is furthermore the author of several non-fiction books, including: Bad Blood: A Walk Along the Irish Border and The Sign of the Cross: Travels in Catholic Europe. Toibin wrote the stage play Beauty in a Broken Place, which premiered in Dublin in 2004. In the collection of essays New Ways to Kill Your Mother: Writers and Their Families (2012 ), he examined the biographies of James Baldwin, John Millington Synge, William Butler Yeats and other.

As a journalist, Tóibín was his main occupation - in addition to his literary work - continually active in Ireland. In addition Toibin also published literary criticism. He edited the book by Paul Durcan The Kilfenora Teaboy 1997 and The Penguin Book of Irish Fiction of 1999 Toibin wrote with Carmen Calil 1999 The Modern Library:. . The 200 Best Novels in English since 1950 Tóibín published in 2002 a collection of essays Love in A Dark Time: Gay lives from Wilde to Almodóvar and 2002, a study of Lady Gregory Lady Gregory's Toothbrush.

Tóibín is a member of Aosdána and has taught at Stanford University and The University of Texas at Austin. He also lectured at several universities such as Boston College and New York University.

Literary awards (selection)

  • The novel The Blackwater Lightship was nominated for the Booker Prize in 1999 and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2001.
  • For the novel The Master Tóibín won the Stonewall Book Award, the Lambda Literary Award and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2006; also listed on the New York Times among the ten most important books of the year of publication in 2004 and shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2004.
  • With Brooklyn (2009), a novel Tóibíns 2009 was again nominated for the Booker Prize. The book won the Costa Book Award 2009 in the category " Best Novel ".
  • The Testament of Mary (2012 ) 2013 was also nominated for the Booker Prize.
