Colour Index International

The Colour Index ( CI short ) is an existing since 1925 reference book of all common dye and dye-based chemicals and is considered a standard work in the field of pigment and dye chemistry.

  • 2.2.1 Classification

General

The Colour Index is published by the British Society of Dyers and Colourists and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. This work contains information on the chemical structure and trivial names of colorants, but also the synthesis, reaction behavior, solubility, and patent literature. The inclusion in the Colour Index is on a voluntary basis of the manufacturers who do not generally publish the chemical structure itself. Thus, the chemical structure is also of many colorants that have a color index, not publicly available.

Classification

The Colour Index generally distinguishes between dyes and pigments.

C. I. Generic Name

The C. I. Generic name is constructed as follows:

Class designation

The colorants are divided into the following categories. All classes except the pigments are colorants ( dyes ), where the term " Dyes" in CI Generic Name omitted.

Color name

As the color label, can be used in particular:

  • The colors of the color wheel Yellow, Orange, Red, Violet, Blue and Green
  • The achromatic colors White and Black
  • Metal effect pigments
  • Brown

Serial number

Within these groups, newly discovered colorants are numbered consecutively, ie newer colorant have a higher number within their group.

Modification

For some pigments are also distinctions between various modifications (for example, phthalocyanine blue, CI Pigment Blue 15) or Verlackungskationen (for laked pigments such as CI Pigment Red 48). In the example, the modifications listed in the Colour Index by CI Pigment Blue 15 compared.

Others

Food dyes have a C. I. Generic Name. As Patent Blue V, Na salt (E 131) is referred to as Acid Blue 3. Food grade dye is the same as Food Blue 5 (!) Respectively.

C. I. Constitution Number

In addition to the C. I. Generic Name there is a classification according to the so-called CI Constitution Number. Here are the colorants due to chemical peculiarities in numbers according to the following system sorted. One can take rough on chemical characterization of the dyes and pigments thus pursuant to this paragraph ( above table).

Note that although each colorant contained in the Colour Index as CI Generic Name has, but not necessarily a CI Constitution Number. Bismuth vanadate pigments are, for example, under CI Pigment Yellow 184 together but do not CI Constitution Number.

The C. I. Constitution Number is used in official regulations such as the Regulation on cosmetic products ( PDF, 162 kB).

For the correct name of a color agent after CI Constitution Number, it is sufficient number of the abbreviation CI prepend.

Classification

Examples

The classification according to the Colour Index is independent of the CAS division. The Colour Index is used in pigment and dye chemistry and brand names used across the pigment and dye industry, especially the CI Name the usual notation for characterization. The more theory -heavy CAS number is also not common as the IUPAC nomenclature colorant area.
