Conisania luteago, also called Brown Yellow Leimkrauteule, is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ). The species was formerly attributed to the genus Hadena. It was placed in the context of a re-evaluation by hackers in the genus Conisania 1996.

Features

Butterfly

In Conisania luteago is medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan from 29 to 40 millimeters. The color of the forewings varies considerably in strength and intensity going from golden yellow to reddish yellow, yellow- brown to ocher to. Often lines and blemishes are indistinct and blurred. The middle shade is occasionally obscured and shimmer brown orange, so even at the subspecies olbiena. The hind wings are plain gray-brown to yellow-brown.

Caterpillar

Adults caterpillars are colored pale brownish yellow. The back lot is somewhat obscured. In each segment, four small black dot warts take off. The spiracles are surrounded bright and black, the head shimmers shiny yellow-brown.

Similar Species

  • Conisania andalusica distinguished by the brownish ground color and the clear, very light stain.
  • The nominate of Xestia lorezi is usually paler in color than the drawing poor copies of luteago.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area stretches from France through the south-eastern areas of Europe to Central Asia. The northernmost extension includes the Baltic States. It also occurs in North Africa. Preferred habitat is warm slopes, rocky valleys and steppe areas.

Way of life

Conisania luteago is one generation per year. Main flight period are the months of May and June. The moths are mostly nocturnal and visit occasionally artificial light sources. The caterpillars feed mainly on the roots and stems of Leimkrautarten ( Silene ). They live from July to August. The species overwinters as a pupa.

Endangering

Conisania luteago occurs in Germany in a few states. Usually only single finds were reported, so that the type on the Red List of endangered species in Category D (data deficient ) substance.

  • Conisania luteago behouneki ( de Freina, 1983), Sardinia and some small offshore islands
