Description

Appearance and leaves

Silene species grow as an annual or biennial or perennial herbaceous plants, rarely there are subshrubs. The stems are self erect, ascending or creeping.

From the opposite constantly arranged foliage leaves, the lower are usually stalked and the upper usually sessile. The leaf blades are pfriemförmig simple, linear, lanceolate to ovate - lanceolate or elliptic.

Inflorescences and flowers

The flowers appear singly or in inflorescences, which have the form of Monochasien, like Asia or thyrsi summarized. The flowers are hermaphrodite or unisexual. Frequently male sterile flowers occur with significantly shorter Androgynophoren and crowns of plants with hermaphrodite flowers otherwise. Partial is secondary dioecious ( dioecious ) originated with male and female flowers on separate plants.

The flowers are radial symmetry fünfzählig double perianth. The five sepals are Roehrig, funnel -, oval to bell-shaped overgrown. The calyx is usually ten annoying. The five calyx teeth have a ciliated, membranous margin. The petals have a wide range of colors. The five petals are each undivided or divided into two or four lobes. The petals are often divided into characteristic nail and plate, that designated as " nail " elongated tapered Kronblattteil extends into the calyx tube and the plate part of the Kronblatts is forming bent the visible part of the crown. There are Kronschuppen ( they form a secondary crown ) available. There are two circles, each with five stamens present. Three or five carpels are fused into an ovary. The ovary contains many ovules. There are three or five free pen available. The Androgynophor is more or less conspicuous.

Fruit and seeds

The fruit capsule opens with six, ten, or rarely five teeth. Rarely berries are formed, for example, pigeon's crop ( Silene baccifera ), these species were previously in a separate genus Cucubalus. The tiny kidney-shaped seeds have a more or less warty surface and sometimes a winged edge.

Ecology

Depending on the Silene - type is therophytes, hemicryptophytes or chamaephytes.

Silene genus known for different types of metallophytes (metal pointer plants). You can absorb greater amounts of heavy metals (zinc, cobalt, cadmium, mercury ).

Pollination is effected for example by butterflies (Lepidoptera ). There are types (often with showy flowers colors), which during the day ( butterflies ), this includes all types belonging to the former genus Lychnis and Viscaria. Many species also earlier in the genus Silene were enggefassten have white flowers and are pollinated during the night (moth ). The Nachtblütigkeit seems to have appeared several times from originally tagblühenden species. Other insects play a role in pollination. Especially with the therophytes comes before self-pollination ( autogamy or geitonogamy ). Self- compatibility occurs in many species. Some species have a strong fragrance.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Silene was built in 1753, set up by Carl Linnaeus in Species Plantarum. For protologue includes the diagnosis in Genera Plantarum. The botanical genus name Silene is the feminine form of Silenus, a figure in Greek mythology. Silene L. nom. cons. was according to the rules of the ICBN ( Vienna Code Article 14.4 & App. III) conserved over Lychnis L. nom. rej. Other synonyms for Silene L. are: .. .. . Atocion Adans, Behen Moench, Charesia EABusch, Coronaria Guett, Cucubalus L., Elisanthe ( Fenzl ) Reichenb, Eudianthe ( Rchb. ) Rchb, Gastrocalyx Schischk, Gastrolychnis ( Fenzl ) Rchb. , Helio sperm ( Rchb. ) Rchb. , Melandrium Röhl. , Melandryum Rchb. , Oberna ( Adans. ) Belli, Otites Adans. , Physolychnis ( Bentham ) Ruprecht, Pleconax Adans. , Pleconax Raf., Polyschemone Schott, Schischkiniella Steenis, Steris ( Adans. ) Belli, Viscaria Bernh. , Ms Ella Wahlberg and Viscago tin.

The genus Silene is part of the tribe Sileneae in the subfamily within the family Caryophyllaceae Caryophylloideae.

The scope of the genus Silene, Lychnis, Viscaria, Melandrium and Cucubalus have long been controversial. While the latter two genera are probably now safely contained in Silene, there are still almost equivalent opinions Lychnis to keep as a separate genus or to make their types in a very species-rich genus Silene. Molecular genetic data provide two ways to monophyletic genera here to get. There is the option of either the genus Silene into several smaller genera break down, then you can also retain the genus Lychnis, or forming a large genus Silene in all kinds ( from Cucubalus, Melandrium, Lychnis, Silene, Viscaria ) are included.

, There are approximately 600 (or the Lychnis species 700) Silene spp. They are mainly located in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere. But there are also species in Africa and South America. In China, 110 species occur (without Lychnis species), 67 of them only there. There are species at all altitudes, at altitudes of about 5000 meters occur at least three species, but the record height of 5200 meters in Tibet reached Silene zhongbaensis.
