Conrad (Bishop of Utrecht)

Conrad of Utrecht ( † April 13, 1099 in Utrecht) was from 1076 to 1099 Bishop of Utrecht.

Life

Konrad was a canon and treasurer of the Archbishop of Mainz, before he became bishop of Utrecht. He was a loyal supporter of Henry IV during the Investiture Controversy. It was in 1080 at the Synod of Brixen in the deposition of Gregory VII and the choice Wiberts to Clement III. present. Also at the enthronement of Clement III. in Rome in 1084 he was there. In addition, he was in 1081 and 1085 present in Kaufungen and Gerstungen in the negotiations between the Emperor and Saxon magnates. Again he gave in 1085 at the Synod convened by the emperor in Mainz part. In 1090 he accompanied Henry IV on his third expedition to Italy.

Because royal followers had set fire to the St. Peter's Church in Utrecht, handed the emperor the very beginning of Conrad's pontificate the diocese to atone some dominions. In the dispute with the Count of Holland Konrad lost all acquisitions of his predecessor William again. Henry IV strengthened its position by conferring upon him the confiscated counties of Margrave Egbert in Friesland. Other possessions were added through donations from other sources.

Konrad is often referred to as an educator Henry V. After this had been elected king, Konrad prepared him for his future role as ruler, while both in the wake of Henry IV were located.

Konrad founded with Henry IV, the Abbey of St. Mary in Utrecht. On April 13, 1099 he was stabbed after Mass of the Frisian architect Pleber. The cause of the deadly dispute was allegedly that Konrad whose son had elicited the " master secret" to drain the swampy foundation of St. Mary's Church.
