Copenhagen Opera House

The Royal Opera House ( in Danish Operaen ) on the island of Holmen in Copenhagen, the Danish National Opera and one of the most advanced stages of the world. Institutionally, it is part of the Royal Theatre.

The house was donated by Mærsk Mc- Kinney Møller and the " AP Møller and Chastine McKinney Møller Foundation " to the Danish state. Arnold Peter Møller was a co-founder of the company Maersk, the largest company in Scandinavia today.

The building was designed by Henning Larsen. Construction began in June 2001 and was completed on 1 October 2004. The Opera House was opened on 15 January 2005 with a special concert. Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the Danish Queen Margrethe II were present. The first opera, Verdi's Aida, took place on 26 January 2005.

In 2008, the building and the project architects and engineers received the Outstanding Structure Award of IABSE.
