Corent

Corent is a commune with 688 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Puy -de- Dôme in the Auvergne region. It is located about 20 kilometers south of Clermont -Ferrand.

Population

The inhabitants of the small village has been increasing since the 1960s, back to stable. The former winegrower village belongs to the catchment area of ​​the nearby city of Clermont- Ferrand, but also maintains its rural character. The conditional by the geography of tightness prevents a greater growth of Corent.

Geography

The elongated, medieval village of Corent is widely visible on the eastern side of the Plateau de Corent. The name Corent goes back to the Celtic word " kar " (large rock).

East of the village flows about 200 meters lower down the river Allier. To the west rises above the village a small basaltic plateau that was created by a relief inversion: a front of about 30 million years ago in the Oligocene in a valley flowing lava can be seen as an elevation in the landscape today by the erosion of softer marl adjacent layers.

Just south of the village center is a former quarry for pozzolan.

History

Corent has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The Gauls established an oppidum on the plateau. Still ongoing archaeological excavations have brought thousands of animal skeletons and Italian amphorae from Roman times to light. Corent applies current knowledge as an important place of worship.

Since the 11th century Corent is known for its wines.

Attractions

Corent is due to its location well worth seeing. The narrow streets and passages to pull tubular on a step on the slopes along the plateau. The narrowness due, inter alia, the unusual northern alignment of the village church. It can still be found traces of the past as a wine-growing village, including numerous wine cellar.

On the plateau itself, the ruins of a medieval tower and the archaeological excavations can be visited. The view from here over the volcanic mountains of the area until the Forez and the river Allier and the paper mill of the Bank of France.
