Cornudella de Montsant

Cornudella de Montsant is a Catalan municipality in the province of Tarragona, in northeastern Spain. It is located in the comarca of Priorat.

Location

Cornudella is located about 30 km northwest of Tarragona in the extreme northeast of the Priory and, with about 63 square kilometers, the largest district area of the Comarca. The municipality is situated on the upper reaches of the river Siurana between the massif of Montsant, which reaches a height of up to 1166 meters here and the mountains of Prades with up to 1093 meters.

The eastern part of the district is already in the mountains of Prades is dominated by impressive rock on which stands the ancient fortress village of Siurana. It was incorporated in 1942 to Cornudella.

History

The first mention of the settlement Cornudella dates from the 12th century. Inhabitants of the village were involved with Ramon Berenguer IV in the conquest of Valencia and were rewarded for it. Cornudella already had a certain demographic importance. With the beginning of the 15th century, the church, the town walls and was the second church.

Attractions

On a mighty limestone cliffs in 737 meters is the Teilort Siurana. It offers a panoramic view of the valley of the same river and lake. The rocky landscape makes Siurana a magnet for climbers.

Cornudella de Montsant is also a good starting point for exploring the wine regions Priorat and Montsant, with the Celler Cooperatiu (1919 ), built by the Catalan architect Cèsar Martinell.

Economy

An important economic activity of the city is the cultivation of vines and hazelnut cultivation.

Any additional important product of agriculture is the olive oil. The small Arbequina is the predominant variety of olive. This olive oil has the Protected Designation of Origin Siurana.
