Council of the Bishops' Conferences of Europe

The Council of European Bishops 'Conferences ( Consilium Conferentiarum Episcoporum Europae, CCEE ) is an association of the presidents of Roman Catholic Bishops' Conferences in Europe. Another European body, the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community ( COMECE).

Establishing the CCEE

On November 18, 1965 came together towards the end of the Second Vatican Council, the presidents of 13 national bishops' conferences in Rome. At this meeting, they put a committee consisting of six representatives and a Joint Secretary a. The Committee received the work order, with the Bishops' Conferences in Europe on further cooperation and the provision of pastoral sectors in which co-operation appeared to be particularly urgent to discuss. On the following symposia concrete steps and ways of implementation have been developed and presented. On 23-24. March 1971 was the inaugural meeting of the CCEE held in Rome.

Duties and Organs

Task of CCEE is to promote the collegial collaboration of bishops in Europe, the General Assembly is composed of the presidents of the individual bishops' conferences, as well as the Archbishop of Luxembourg. The areas of work of the Conference and councils include: the pastoral care of vocations, Buddhism, evangelization, catechesis, Islam in Europe, the media, migration and ecumenism and the environment.

In several areas, there is a close ecumenical cooperation with the Conference of European Churches (CEC), which led to the so far three European Ecumenical Assemblies in Basel in 1989, in Graz in 1997 and 2007 in Sibiu. A common verantwortetes ecumenism paper is the Charter oecumenica.
