Count Five

Count Five was a garage rock band from San Jose ( California).

Band History

John " Mouse" Michalski and characteristic Ellner founded in 1964 in San Jose The Squires. After a short time under this name and a few line -up experiments, found himself with John Byrne, Roy Chaney and Craig " Butch" Atkinson a fixed occupation and was called to order in Count Five. John Byrne, whose nickname Sean had already played earlier in Dublin with his band The Scorpions. The band first appeared in Dracula costumes. In 1966 she released the album Psychotic Reaction and had an appearance in the fall result in # 1748 the TV show American Bandstand, which aired on 12 November 1966. They played several gigs then, among others, The Animals and Iron Butterfly and appeared on American television. By the year 1969, they released several more singles, until she broke up.

In 1972, the compilation Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968 was, with recorded on the Psychotic Reaction. The sampler increased awareness of the band, several bootlegs and re-releases of the debut album has since been released.

The band came on 11 April 1987, a Reunionkonzert together again. The recordings were released under the name Live Psychotic Reunion. Atkinson died in 1999.

Reception

Critics called the band as untalented, if one disregards characteristic Ellners voice and occasionally lead guitar Michalskis inserts. They had their song Psychotic Reaction a top five hit in the U.S. Billboard charts in 1966, which today is considered a classic of garage rock and was often gecovert, including Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, The Cramps and Joey Dee & the Starliters. The song was heavily influenced by the Yardbirds.
