Creully

Creully is a commune with 1692 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Calvados in the Basse -Normandie; it belongs to the district of Caen and is the administrative center of the canton Creully. The name of the place goes to the Anglo-Saxon term churl back what ' peasant ' means.

Creully lies in the valley of Seulles.

Attractions

The Castle of Creully goes back to a medieval castle from the 11th century, but was rebuilt several times. Today, it appears mainly in the Renaissance style.

In the course of the Normandy Invasion Field Marshal Montgomery taught from 8 June 1944 in the castle for two weeks his headquarters. On June 12, 1944 King George V visited him together with Prime Minister Churchill in the castle, General de Gaulle met Montgomery here on June 14, 1944. Their reports on the visit of the king described the British press, the position of the lock in sufficient detail to that the German Air Force was able to force Montgomery with bomb attacks to move its headquarters to Blay at Bayeux.
