Cambes-en-Plaine

Cambes -en- Plaine is a commune with 1368 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Calvados in the Basse -Normandie.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the northern outskirts of Caen, about eight kilometers from the city.

Neighboring communities of Cambes -en- Plaine are Anisy in the north, Mathieu in the northeast, Biéville - Beuville in the east, Épron in the Southeast, Saint-Contest in the southwest and Villon -les- Buisson in the West.

History

The village was first mentioned in the 10th century. The village was dominated by the now-defunct castle of the ruling family Mathan. A descendant of the family was chamberlain of Napoleon. In the 19th century opened a factory that sold alcohol obtained from sugar beet to Le Havre. 1945 it was closed. During the Battle of Normandy in 1944 the village was destroyed to 80 percent. The reconstruction lasted fifteen years.

Name

Until 1937 the church was only Cambes.
