Cubzac-les-Ponts

Cubzac -les -Ponts is a commune with 2164 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Gironde department in the region of Aquitaine.

Geography

Cubzac -les -Ponts is located approximately 20 kilometers north-east of Bordeaux on the east bank of the Dordogne. Three bridges over the river connecting the city with Saint- Vincent- de -Paul, on the other side of the river. These are from north to south: a railroad bridge; the constructed by Gustave Eiffel road bridge of Cubzac over which the department operates as a two-lane road D1010 road bridge, as well as a six-lane motorway bridge the Autoroute A10 for long distance service. North of the highway bridge creates a fourth bridge for the high-speed line of the TGV from Paris to Bordeaux.

The Atlantic Ocean to the west is around 50 kilometers away.

History

In Roman times, during the conquest of Gaul, the place was used as a crossing over the Dordogne.

In the Middle Ages the town was used to monitor the area, especially with the help of the watch tower of the Château des Quatre Fils Aymon.

During the French Revolution, the parish of Saint -Julien de Cubzac formed the community Cubzac, from which emerged the city Cubzac -les -Ponts in 1885.

Since there are many rocks of limestone in the vicinity, this was temporarily used for buildings in Bordeaux.

Today Cubzac -les -Ponts is also active in viticulture and the production of champagne.

Attractions

Two sights from Cubzac -les -Ponts were added to the list of historic monuments: A painting in the church L' Eglise Saint -Julien de Cubzac and the ruins of the Château des Quatre- Fils - Aymon.
