Ćuprija

Ćuprija ( Serbian Cyrillic Ћуприја ) is a town of about 20,400 inhabitants in the narrower Serbia. It is located in the district Pomoravlje on the right bank of the Morava. Ćuprija is the chief town of the same name.

History

Ćuprija was founded as a Roman outpost at a junction on the Morava River. It was at that time the name Horreum Margi. In the Middle Ages the name to Ravno, which is preserved in the name of the located near the monastery Ravanica changed. The current name of the city comes from the Turkish word for " bridge " ( köprü ), suggesting the centuries-old domination by the Ottoman Empire.

Traffic

The city lies at the intersection of highways 1 (after Belgrade and Niš ) and 5 ( Bulgaria ), as well as on the railway line from Skopje to Belgrade.
