Currency sign (typography)

The general currency symbol (¤), colloquially referred to as a turtle or Sputnik because of its appearance, is used in typography as a placeholder for an arbitrary national currency.

It is always used when to be expressed that in its place the respective national currency symbol to stand, but is specified initially irrelevant or even closer, which will be later. Thus, it appeared, for example, in many computer operating systems in the setting, whether that pertains to the regional settings of the user -specific currency symbol to appear before or after the currency amount.

The general currency symbol is included in Unicode as the CURRENCY SIGN ( U 00 A4), in HTML it can ¤ or numerically referenced with ¤. In the character set ISO -8859- 1 as well as in some other European character sets, it is also included as a sign of A4 - in ISO -8859-15 located at this code position, however, the euro sign ( € ); the general currency symbol is not included in this character set.

The general currency symbol was formerly found on keyboards of electric typewriters and telex machines.
