Custóias is a former municipality in northern Portugal. 1964 104 people were killed in the railway accident Custóias.

History

Antas and other finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. Here were fortified villages of the Castro culture until the area was in the 1st century BC, part of the Roman Empire. After the invasion of the Suevi in the 5th century AD, the area became part of the Western Goth. From the time until the Arab conquest from 717 and the subsequent Reconquista little is known about the area. For the first time Custóias is mentioned in documents of the 10th century, when Costoyas or Custodias. A monastery was here founded in 1045 handed over to the Hospitallers 1122-1128 by Theresa of León. In the royal surveys 1258 Santiago de Custóias as an independent municipality in the district ( Couto ) Leca da Ordem do Hospital performed.

The formerly independent municipality Custóias belongs since 2013 to the newly created municipality of the União de Freguesias Custóias, Leca do Balio e Guifões in a circle ( concelho ) of Matosinhos, Porto district. The former municipality has an area of ​​6 km ² and has 18,702 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011).
