Cyclone Andrea

Hurricane Andrea moved on 3rd - 6th January 2012 concerning Western and Central Europe. He remained without serious consequences, but was the strongest hurricane of the western winter season 2011 /2012. Together with the two subsequent lows Bibiana and Celine he brought locally enormous masses of snow.

Meteorology

The low- Andrea had formed as Iceland Deep 30 December 2011, crossed on typical cyclone track southern Scandinavia, and disintegrated on January 8 in the room Novaya Zemlya. The associated Front depth crossed the region from northwest to southeast, the wind was blowing predominantly from the northwest.

In the area of ​​intense low-pressure led to drops in temperature, which were moderate, however, in their scope of about five degrees Celsius. In many regions of gale of thunderstorms and heavy rain was accompanied, some of which went down as snow and led to large snow drifts. In some regions led to the heavy rainfall flooding. At the North and Baltic Sea, there was significant increase in flood levels. On the mountains, from the Alps to the uplands throughout hurricane winds with top speeds in excess of 170 and peak gusts over 200 kilometers per hour were measured. At the weather station at the Konkordiahütte even a gust of 270 km / h was recorded.

Andrea took two more deep cores by: Bibiana to train themselves effectively weather around the 7th, and Celine to Central Europe pulling on 8/9 January. In particular, in the Tyrolean Alps, there were huge masses of snow.

Damage

Overall, the hurricane was less than announced in the severe weather warnings. The German Weather Service was in the course of January 5 for most regions of Germany clear. Towards evening the wind had subsided significantly almost everywhere.

Severe damage has been reported especially from the UK, Belgium and France. In Germany, one death was to be deplored.

In space Arlberg and Paznaun Galtür were at leisure shift change on the weekend of 7/8 January, many skiers trapped due to avalanche danger.
