Cyrano de Bergerac [ siʀano dəbɛʀʒəʀak ] is a romantic - comedy verse drama, the Edmond Rostand wrote in 1897 - the first performance took place on December 28, 1897, from the Théâtre de la Porte Saint -Martin.

The title character Cyrano de Bergerac, a French poet of the 17th century, suffers his huge nose. Many scoffers dies in a duel. Nevertheless de Bergerac is described as sensitive; he is in love with his handsome cousin Roxane. Because he fears their rejection, he hides his true feelings. As Roxane confesses her affection for Christian Neuvillette, de Bergerac is ready to support this by writing poems in his place. The pretty, but regarded as " arrant fool " Christian Neuvillette serves in the same regiment as de Bergerac in the Gascon cadets.

In order to satisfy the claims of the beloved romantic, lends de Bergerac his rival his poetic talent, so Neuvillette enjoying success alone. Finally de Bergerac convinced the two of them to come to the altar and escapes Roxane so the Count Guiche, who wants to make her his mistress.   • Franco Alfano opera, composed in 1936, was in 2002 at the Kiel Opera in 2003 in Montpellier and 2004/ 05 at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, again listed here with Plácido Domingo in the title role. Productions in Paris, at the Baden State Theatre Karlsruhe and Valencia followed. Another opera, in Estonian, was composed by Eino Tamberg.   • An eponymous musical with music by Marc Schubring and texts by Wolfgang Adenberg in 1995 in Saarbrücken State Theatre premiere. The role of Christian was interpreted by Jonas Kaufmann.
