Dagmar (given name)

Dagmar is a feminine first name not clearly clarified origin, who (based on the worship of sacred medieval Queen of Denmark ) found particularly in Denmark proliferation and is generally regarded as "typical Danish " woman's name. The now virtually extinct masculine form of the name was Dagomar.

Origin and Meaning

The Germanic form of the name Dagmar is derived in name books from the Old Slavic name frequently Dragomira. A direct transfer from the Slav is very unlikely, would be at best conceivable that Dragomir (a) and Dag ( o) mar represent the Slavic or Germanic version of a (hypothetical) ancient common or cross-cultural name. In any case, however, from a relationship with the West Germanic name Dagobert / Taginbert ( with the female variant Dagoberta or Taginberta ) or one of the derived short forms (such as Tasso, Dago or Datzo ) is assumed.

In Danish, the name is often popular etymology meaning " famous day " (from dag for day and for meri famous) settled. For this purpose also alleged documents from the Old High German are given ( day Mari for " the bright day " ) sometimes.

Dagmar: towards the end of the 19th century from Danish acquired female. First Last Dagmar is not originally a Germanic name, but a corruption of the Old Czech name Drahomíra. He came to Denmark by the daughter of the Bohemian King Ottokar I. Přemysl, Dragomira Margareta ( 12th/13th c.), The King Waldemar II married. There was Dragomira as Dagmar ( as altsächs. Dag >> << day Mari >> << famous ) construed. Really popular but the name was only in the 19th century due to the Dagmar in the historical novel Valdemar Sejr >> << B. Inge Man (1826 ).
