Damaskinos (Papandreou) of Adrianople

Damaskinos ( Papandreou ) (* as Basil Papandreou on 23 February 1936 in Kato Chryssovitsa, Aetolia, Greece, † November 5, 2011 in Geneva) was an Orthodox Metropolitan Archbishop in Geneva.

Life

After attending the School of Theology of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Halki (1955-1959) he was ordained a deacon in 1959. 1959 to 1965 he studied with a scholarship of the Ecumenical Patriarchate church history, comparative religion and philosophy of religion at the German universities of Bonn and Marburg. In 1966, he was "The establishment and organization of the Armenian Church to the Fourth Ecumenical Council " doctorate with the thesis at the University of Athens. After his ordination in 1961 he was appointed Archimandrite. In the 1960s he worked as a chaplain for the Greek guest workers in Bonn. He also founded the first three Greek primary schools in Germany. After all management functions from 1963 to 1964 at the Higher School of Greek social worker in Mayrhofen Michael Roden churches in Cologne, he was from 1965 to 1969 head of the new Orthodox monk center in Taizé.

In 1969 he became director of the Orthodox Centre of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel in Chambésy in Geneva and at the same time Secretary for the preparation of the Holy and Great Council of the Byzantine Orthodox Churches. On December 6, 1970 he was ordained a bishop and was given the title of Metropolitan of Tranoupolis. He built the Orthodox center in Chambésy from a inter-religious meeting center of international standing. Founded in 1996, " Center for Higher Studies in Orthodox Theology " is working closely with the theological faculties of the universities of Geneva and Fribourg.

The Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate appointed him on October 2, 1982 " Metropolitan of Switzerland and Exarch of Europe ".

Damaskinos was a personality of ecumenism, a member of numerous committees and scientific academies and co-editor of the growing consensus documents (Volumes 1-3). He was deeply connected with Pope John Paul II and a friend of Pope Benedict XVI. ( " Brother and friend ").
