Damian Zimoń

Damian zimon ( born October 25, 1934 in Niedobczyce, Poland) was from 1985 to 2011 Bishop / Archbishop of Katowice.

Life

After admission to the Archbishop's Seminary in Krakow and the study of Catholic theology Damian zimon received on 21 December 1957, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Subsequently, he was first chaplain in Tychy and later in Pszów and Katowice. From 1969 to 1975 he was chancellor of the Krakow seminary and then to Provost at the parish of St. Mary in Katowice. From 1970 to 1977 he also completed a postgraduate course in pastoral theology at the Catholic University of Lublin and in historic liturgy at the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Krakow.

On June 3, 1985, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop of Katowice. He received his episcopal consecration Józef Cardinal Glemp on November 29th of the same year in the Christ the King Cathedral Katowice.

His episcopal motto Praedicamus crucifixum ( " We proclaim [ Christ ] who was crucified " ) comes from the first letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 1.23 EU).

After the restructuring of the Catholic Church in Poland by the decision adopted by John Paul II Apostolic Constitution Totus Tuus Poloniae populus of 25 March 1992 and the related survey of the diocese to the Archdiocese of Katowice Damian zimon became the first Archbishop of Katowice and thus for the first metropolitans the newly created, the same ecclesiastical province ordered.

29 October 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. Damian zimon resignation and released him on grounds of age from his post as Archbishop of Katowice.
