Dancing at Lughnasa ( Alternative title: A summer and a night; Original Title: Dancing at Lughnasa ). 's An American- British- Irish film drama from 1998 was directed by Pat O'Connor, wrote the screenplay Frank McGuinness based on a play by Brian Friel.

Action

The story is set in Ireland in 1936 and is told from the point of view of Michael Mundy, who was a little boy then. His mother Christina Mundy and their unmarried sisters Kate, Margaret, Rose and Agnes live together on an estate. Only Kate did a good job as a teacher while Christina and Margaret are unemployed.

The brother of the five women, Jack, is a priest. He returns from a mission in Africa, where he spent 25 years back. Michael's father Gerry Evans comes to visit and makes Christina to marry him. He announces that he has reported used in the Spanish Civil War. Evans travels to Spain, is a little later wounded and dies.

Reviews

The lexicon of international film wrote that the film was " remarkably undramatic " and throw " a wistful look back at happiness and loss of family cohesion ". He was " played and photographed shiny ".

The magazine Cinema wrote that the film was "a little too smooth ."

Pat O'Connor was nominated in 1998 for the Golden Lion at the International Film Festival of Venice. Kathy Burke was nominated in 1999 for a Golden Satellite Award. Darrell Johnston was nominated for the Young Artist Award in 1999.

Brid Brennan won the Irish Film and Television Award in 1999. Meryl Streep, Frank McGuinness, Kenneth MacMillan and the film for Best Feature Film was nominated for the same price.
