Telluride Film Festival

The Telluride Film Festival is held annually since 1974 in Telluride, Colorado, instead.

History

The idea to implementation of a film festival in Telluride goes back to the film restorer James Card ( 1915-2000 ). After the card was renovated Sheridan Opera House in Telluride visited in 1973, he convinced the couple Bill and Stella Pence, Tom Luddy and the implementation of the first event. Card originally planned mainly performances of forgotten and difficult -to-find movies. From 1977 to 1988, the film historian William K. Everson ( 1929-1996 ) next Luddy and Pence was a third co-director of the festival. Since his retirement, the third place is occupied annually by changing Guest Directors, including Donald Richie (1988 ), Laurie Anderson (1991 ), John Boorman (1993 ), Peter Bogdanovich (1998 ), Peter Sellars (1999), Salman Rushdie (2001) Stephen Sondheim (2003), Slavoj Žižek (2008 ) and Michael Ondaatje (2010).

At the first festival, which began on 30 August 1974, including a restored version of the silent film ... but the flesh is weak shown from 1928. Meanwhile, actress Gloria Swanson was also there and was the first winner of the Telluride Film Festival Silver Medallion Award for her life's work. Two other winners this year were Francis Ford Coppola and Leni Riefenstahl. Three winners will be awarded annually since then and since 1995 a fourth medal is awarded a special prize to individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions outside the film industry to the art of film.

Addition to the presentation of classics Film Festival are also new films shown every year as World or U.S. Premieres at Telluride, with smaller, obscure films are represented.

In the same place is held annually with the Mountain Film in Telluride since 1979, another film festival.
