Daniel Bethlehem

Sir Daniel Bethlehem KCMG Lincoln, QC ( born June 16, 1960 in London ) is a British lawyer who has worked as a lawyer in the field of international law. He represented both his native country as well as a number of other States against various international dishes and served from 2006 to 2011 as chief legal adviser to the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Life

Daniel Bethlehem was born in London in 1960 and grew up in South Africa, where in 1981 a degree in Political Science and International Relations at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg with a BA completed. After returning to his native country, he also studied law and became in 1985 a LL.B. degree from Bristol University in 1990 and an LL.M. degree from Queens ' College, University of Cambridge.

After several years initially worked for an investment bank, in 1988, he received his license as a barrister. From 1990 to 2006 he worked until 1992, first at the Registry Forrester Norall & Sutton in Brussels and then in private practice in his hometown, as a lawyer specializing in the field of international law. During this time he represented his country several times before the International Court of Justice, the European Court of Justice and the International Tribunal for the Law. In addition, he joined, among others, for Malaysia, Belgium and Israel before the International Court of Justice, and for Turkey in the European Court of Human Rights and for the United States before the Iran - United States Claims Tribunal.

Daniel Bethlehem also taught from 1992 to 1998 International Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Subsequently, he worked from 1998 to 2003 as deputy director and from 2003 to 2006 as director of the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge, where he was during that time a Fellow of Clare Hall College.

From 2006 to 2011 he served as a senior legal advisor ( Principal Legal Adviser ) in the rank of Director General in the Foreign Ministry. Since his retirement from the ministry he's back working in private practice. He is also the founding director of consulting firm Legal Policy International. The daily The Times counted him in the years 2008 and 2009 in their " Times Law 100 " list of the 100 most influential British lawyers.

Awards

Daniel Bethlehem was established in 2003 to Queen's Counsel and was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George seven years later. He is also a Bencher ( an appointed senior member) of the English Bar Middle Temple.
