Danny Gottlieb

Daniel Richard " Danny" Gottlieb ( born April 18, 1953 in New York) is an American jazz drummer.

Life

Gottlieb grew up in Union (New Jersey) and began the age of 14 playing the drums. He studied at the University of Miami, where he earned his degree ( BM) made ​​in 1975, and privately among others, Joe Morello (since 1970 ), Gary Chester, Mel Lewis and Jack DeJohnette.

He is best known mid-1970s as a member of the band by Gary Burton. In 1977 he left this with Pat Metheny, to become a member of the first Pat Metheny Group ( with Mark Egan and Lyle Mays ), which he served until 1984. In 1978, he was with Colours by Eberhard Weber on tour. He was also a member of the bands of Stan Getz ( 1980 short in the years ), the Gil Evans Orchestra (with whom he played frequently ), Bobby McFerrin, the Mahavishnu Orchestra of John McLaughlin ( around 1984 ), Eddie Gomez, Al DiMeola (1985 ), Mike Stern and played with many other jazz greats and other musicians such as Sting. In 1982 he founded with Mark Egan as co- leader of the group element, the self-titled debut album was released in 1982. Occasionally he played in Contempo Jazz Trio with Mark Soskin and Chip Jackson.

Gottlieb reported regularly in jazz clinics and has also published several instructional DVDs, some with his teacher Joe Morello. He is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida and was artist in residence at several other universities.

Gottlieb was a sought after studio musician on numerous boards as a sideman ( five of which received Grammy ), several as co- leader, for example, Elements and brought to 2007 five CDs as a leader out ( first Aquamarine 1987).
