Danny Kassap

Danny Tshindind Kassap (born 24 June 1982 Lubumbashi, Zaire; † 2 May, 2011 Toronto ) was a Canadian athlete, who came from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

2001, the long-distance runner came to Canada to participate in the Jeux de la Francophonie. He filed an application for political asylum and settled in Toronto, where he began to train in the University of Toronto Track Club. On July 6, 2003, he presented in Hamilton with 28:57,28 min on a record in the 10,000 -meter run for the DR Congo.

In 2004 he won the Toronto Waterfront Marathon, and he finished third at the Ottawa Marathon 2005.

In 2008 he received the Canadian citizenship, which allowed him to compete in international races. After a 15th place in the London Marathon, he started in the fall of the Berlin Marathon. There he collapsed after five kilometers. A sudden cardiac death was averted by an immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation among other things, using a defibrillator. The cause ventricular fibrillation was determined, which was triggered by an undetected viral myocarditis. Since the health insurance took over only part of the cost of 12,000 euros, started his teammates from the University of Toronto a fundraiser that also thanks to the aid of the Berlin Marathon was successful.

After a recovery period of eight months, he once again took on a five- kilometer run part, which he won, and mastered in 2010 a half marathon. Early May 2011, died at the age of 28 years Kassap at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto from as yet unknown causes.
