Dansk Sprognævn

Dansk Sprognævn (short DSN, German: "Danish Language Commission " ) is a public institution of the Danish Ministry of Culture, which sets the rules for the Danish spelling. The Commission shall have its seat at the Research and Information Institute at the Humanistic Faculty of the University of Copenhagen Amager ( KUA short ).

It emerged in 1955 as the successor of the " Spelling Committee of the Ministry of Education " ( Undervisningsministeriets Retskrivningsudvalg ).

Tasks

Dansk Sprognævn follows the change of the Danish language, in order to manufacture rules for the Danish spelling. Basic strain forms a database from new Danish words containing approximately 300,000 words and grows annually by about 5,000 to 7,000 words. The Commission publishes the Retskrivningsordbogen, a dictionary for Danish language, the quarterly Nyt fra Sprognævn ( " News from the Language Commission " ) as well as manuals and instructions. A free information service answers questions from authorities and individuals about the Danish language and their use of language.

Database

The Commission staff will track the language change by reading newspapers, books and other writings, listen to radio, watch TV and in -text databases, especially those with press articles, search. Write down new words and associated quotes, then both fed into the electronic database as are kept also by index cards. So the database for 300,000 words contains about one million application examples. It provides information which words are actually used in the Danish, without referring in collecting whether the individual words are good or bad or right or wrong. New words must not be approved, to be included in the database. Internally, it is the staff for research purposes. Externally, they are, for example, dictionary editors, students and researchers information about the state of the Danish vocabulary.

Dictionary

After 1986 and 1996, was published in 2001, the third edition of the official Danish " dictionary for spelling " ( Retskrivningsordbogen ) that the Retskrivningsordbog 1955 replaced. The book contains 64,000 words and their inflections, the official spelling rules.

In § 2 of the " Act on the Danish spelling " ( Lov om dansk retskrivning ) is determined who is obliged to follow the official spelling from the dictionary. These include the Public Administration, the Folketing and affiliated authorities and all courts. The same applies to non-public educational institutions, which are subsidized by more than half, as well as private and independent schools, in which students are subject to the compulsory education.

Structure

Dansk Sprognævn consists of a 40 - member Board of Directors whose members are appointed for four years. The Council is composed of representatives drawn from various institutions and associations, and bring a special interest in language issues. Areas that are represented in the Dansk Sprognævn through via representatives, are for example: the State, Justice and the Ministry of Education, universities, radio and television, as well as teachers, journalists, writers and actors union. In addition, up to three individuals can be determined with expertise as members of the Board.

A seven -member working committee is responsible for the economy and development strategy of the Commission. Five of the members of this committee are appointed by the Board of Directors, a member of the Ministry of Culture and one of the employees of the affiliated research institute. The Committee is launching a series of expert groups advising the editors of the dictionary, the font Nyt fra Sprognævnet and other publications. The experts also deal with specialized languages ​​and language policy.

An example of such cooperation is since 2006 is the web portal Sproget.dk, which is the result of a collaboration between the institutions of the Ministry of Culture, the Danish Language and Literature Society and the Dansk Sprognævn. On the portal with comprehensive information about the Danish language to the public online free of charge, including reference works such as the official dictionary and the Dansk Sprognævn writings.

International cooperation

At the international level, the Danish Commission works closely with Voice commissions from the other Nordic countries, in order to prevent, among other things, that the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish language unnecessarily apart. The collaboration has been running since 2009 mostly on the " Nordic language co-ordination ", an organ of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Dansk Sprognævn is a member of the "European Federation for national language institutions " ( European Federation of National Institutions for Language, brief EFNIL ).
