The University of Continuing Education Krems (until 30 March 2004: University Centre for Continuing Education with the designation Danube University Krems ) is a jointly operated by the Republic of Austria and the province of Lower Austria University in Krems on the Danube, which provides part-time further education courses. The university is divided into three faculties, the Faculty of Health and Medicine, with around 50 percent of the students is the largest.

History

In April 1994, the Danube University Krems was founded as a " University Center for Continuing Education ", the teaching was recorded in October 1995 with 93 students and three courses. On 1 April 2004, the new Federal Law on the University for Continuing Education Krems into force, largely based on the 2002 University Act occurred. The official name of the Danube University Krems has been changed with this law in " University of Continuing Education Krems ", the first time the university was granted the right to appoint its own university professors. Since the establishment of the University of approximately 16,000 students have completed training, more than 8,000 students from approximately 90 countries are currently studying in one of more than 200 university courses.

Study offers

Location and campus

Your location has the Danube University Krems in the Wachau Valley, a section of the Danube Valley in Lower Austria, which has been declared by UNESCO in 2000 as a World Heritage Site. Part of the University is in the revitalized former tobacco factory Krems -Stein, a characteristic of the early 20th century industrial buildings housed. The three-story reinforced concrete frame structure designed in the style of a " third Baroque " was built in 1919-1922 by the architect Paul Hoppe and redesigned under minimal impact on the historic building by Austrian architect Manfred Wehdorn the early 1990s.

In 2005, the Danube University Krems received additional teaching and research rooms, a new library, a new cafeteria and an auditorium as part of the completion of the Campus Krems. Furthermore, a cinema, restaurant and an apartment house were set up on the 34,000 -square-foot campus. Financing

Sustainer of the University of Continuing Education Krems are jointly the Republic of Austria and the province of Lower Austria. Funding is provided in part by student fees, which must cover the variable course fees (§ 10 DUK -Gesetz).

Legal provisions

Rectorship

Rector of the University of Continuing Education Krems is Friedrich Faulhammer since 1 August 2013.

In February 2007, the then rector Helmut Kramer resigned because of differences in opinion about the strategic management. In May 2007, Heinrich Kern was appointed the new rector. The interim leader, Vice Rector Ada Pellert, did not seem to triple proposal, which led to protests in the Senate and to the allegation of breach of the Equality Directives.

In August 2007 it was announced by the University Council that the discussions about the rector appointment was due to a structural problem. It was decided that the Medical and Life Science from the University of Continuing Education Krems to be offloaded in a newly established private university for medicine. Core was asked to bid for the leadership of the future private university, Pellert was invited to compete for the rectorship of the University of Continuing Education Krems. On 17 December 2007, the University appointed two new vice presidents: Hanna Risku was Vice -Rector for the area of ​​teaching, Jürgen Willer took over the research agendas.
