Shield sheet ( Darmera peltata )

The label sheet ( Darmera peltata ( Torr. ex Benth. ) Voss, Syn Peltiphyllum peltatum ( Torr. ex Benth. ) Engl ) is the only species of the genus Darmera in the family Saxifragaceae ( Saxifragaceae ). The genus name honors the German gardener Karl bowel ( 1843-1918 ).

Features

The label sheet is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height of 50 to 65 centimeters. As outlasting strong and dark brown rhizomes are formed. The numbers that appear after flowering leaves are stalked. The leaf blade is peltate ( = Peltatum, hence the botanical name ), circular, lobed at the edge to split and has a diameter of 20 to 45 centimeters.

The more than 30 inches long, erect, glandular- hairy inflorescence stem is leafless in the rule and often appears before the leaves appear. The flowers are borne in paniculate or schirmrispigen inflorescence, which has a diameter of 15 to 20 millimeters. The five petals are white or pink. There are ten stamens and two to three purple carpels present.

The flowering period extends from April to May

The species has 2n = 34 chromosome number

Occurrence

The label sheet comes in the western U.S. in Oregon and California on stream and river banks before. In the UK and Ireland it is naturalized.

Use

The label sheet is often used as an ornamental plant for groups of trees, stream and pond edges. It is in culture at least since 1873. The cultivar ' Nana' only reaches heights of growth to 30 centimeters.
