The Hochschule Darmstadt, University of Applied Sciences ( h_da ) is a university founded on 1 August 1971 as Fachhochschule Darmstadt in Darmstadt. She is one of the largest practice-oriented state universities in Hessen and among the ten largest in Germany.

History

In the winter semester 1876/77 was the predecessor of the University of Darmstadt, the Darmstadt Landesbaugewerkschule, opens with the fields of architecture and civil engineering. Also, the Department of Design was founded in 1907, in the form of art school in Darmstadt. The Department of Mechanical Engineering was also before the founding of the University of Darmstadt, in 1920 at the Municipal School of Mechanical Engineering Darmstadt. The State School of Chemistry - School of Engineering - in Darmstadt is also one of the predecessor institutions.

On 1 August 1971, the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt was founded and is thus one of the younger Darmstadt universities. On 31 May 2005 it was decided by the Senate of the University, the name for the summer semester 2006 ( March 1 ) in Hochschule Darmstadt, University of Applied Sciences ( h_da ) rename. This decision was confirmed by the University Council.

University

The majority of the approximately 13,000 students at the University of Darmstadt has opted for the information sciences and engineering, a key focus in the courses offered by the university. A total of 18 undergraduate programs are offered in which the diploma can be purchased, 12 undergraduate courses with the Bachelor and 7 postgraduate courses with the master's degree. The h_da is one of the few universities in the Federal Republic, which offer bachelor's and master's degree programs in plastics engineering. In addition the Faculty of Social Sciences and Social Work, with its multidisciplinary social and social science courses offered.

Increasingly, the h_da also engaged in the service training field. In addition to an internationally oriented courses offered to professionals in the "International Business Administration " you can participate in the Darmstadt University also in training in the field of computer science, offered jointly with the French Institute of Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers ( CNAM ). The bachelor's program International Business Administration program is part-time possible in four years.

The Darmstadt University has several locations in Darmstadt city. On the Mathildenhoehe the communications and industrial designer qualify in Hochschulstraße experiment the budding chemical engineers, the Botanical Gardens, biotechnologists, the social workers studying in the city center, and the remaining units are placed centrally on the high school grounds in Darmstadt publisher district.

In the winter semester 2006/2007 the then 15 departments were merged into 11. The curriculum was expanded. In addition, the second location of the university in Dieburg to be extended to 2007 as a center for media, information and journalism.

Foreign countries

The h_da currently maintains relationships with a total of about 80 universities abroad, with those in the areas of teaching and research is intensively worked. Alone with ten partner institutions in the countries of Eastern Europe maintains the Hochschule Darmstadt contacts. To support these activities, the h_da offers an extensive language program, in addition to the official languages of the European Union also includes special offers such as courses for foreign students at the h_da and preparatory studies that lead to internationally recognized certificates.

In the context of intensifying its international degree programs, the University of Darmstadt offers its graduates and those of other universities in electrical engineering, the opportunity to acquire in a 15-month full-time study with the internationally recognized title of " Master of Science" ( M.Sc.). As part of this study technical and managerial skills in the art can "Electrical Engineering / System Design and Technology" to be acquired, as demanded by engineers in senior positions in the European labor market. The department of computer science, the largest of its kind in Germany, the first of the university departments offering international degrees for his undergraduate degree: Here you can after six semesters of the " Bachelor" and acquire four additional semesters of the " Master of Science".

Special

Since 2000, one can study the subject Mechatronics with the degree " Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics " at the h_da. Special hallmark is that the three departments mechanical engineering and plastics engineering, electrical engineering and information technology and computer science to operate the h_da the course together. At the h_da plastics technology is offered in Germany the only master's degree program. Unique in Germany, the graduate study program " Information Law ", whose focus is on legal issues surrounding the Internet and the interdisciplinary law, engineering and economics is linked. Currently, the changeover to Bachelor and Master in Information Law. International are interesting as the four-semester courses in English "Joint International Master computer science " which the h_da offers together with American and Australian universities and the Masters Course M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. All courses at Darmstadt University are accredited in accordance with the requirements of the Accreditation Council. All master's degree programs enable for access to higher service.

Economy

The close cooperation with enterprises and research institutions plays a key role in teaching and research at the University of Darmstadt. The h_da sees itself as an innovative center for teaching and applied research. The Centre for Research and Development was established in 2001.

In addition, the University of Darmstadt is a member of the House of IT, a public-private partnership to promote innovative information and communication technologies in Europe.
