Davanagere (also: Davangere, Kannada: ದಾವಣಗೆರೆ Davanagere [da ː ʋʌɲʌɡere ] ) is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is located in Zentralkarnataka 256 kilometers northwest of the capital Bangalore. With around 435,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ) Davanagere is the seventh largest city in the state. The city is the administrative center of the district of Davanagere.

Davanagere was an insignificant village until Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore, in the 18th century the city gave the Maratha leader Apoji Ram as a fief ( jagir ). This moved to dealers, became an important trading center due to Davanagere and quickly grew. In the 19th century, the British established the cotton industry, which is the main source of income in Davanagere today.

Davanagere is located on National Highway 4 from Chennai via Bangalore to Mumbai. In addition, the city on the Bangalore - Hubli Eisenbahnhstrecke is connected to the railway network.
