Davanagere district

The district Davanagere ( Kannada: ದಾವಣಗೆರೆ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ, also: Davangere ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Administrative center is the eponymous city of Davanagere.

Geography

The district Davanagere lies in Zentralkarnataka. Neighboring districts are in the southeast of Chitradurga, Chikmagalur in the south, in the southwest of Shimoga, Haveri and Bellary in the northwest to the northeast.

The area of ​​the district Davanagere is 5,918 square kilometers. The district area belongs to the southern part of the Deccan Plateau and presents itself as a plateau from which rise isolated hills. The river Tungabhadra flows through the western part of the district forms and forms in parts the border with Haveri district.

The district Davanagere is divided into six taluks Channagiri, Davanagere, Harirar, Harpanahalli, Honnali and Jagalur.

History

Originally belonged to the territory of today's district Davanagere to Chitradurga district. During the British colonial period Davanagere belonged to the princely state of Mysore. After Indian independence Mysore took place in 1949 following the Indian Union. The reorganization of the Indian states, the area of Davanagere in 1956 to a part of the state formed by the boundaries of language Kannada Mysore was (1973 renamed Karnataka ). In 1997, the district Davanagere was dissolved as a separate district from the district of Chitradurga.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, the district Davanagere has 1,946,905 inhabitants. Compared to the last 2001 census, the population was 8.7 percent and thus slower than the average growth of Karnataka ( 15.7 per cent). The population density is 329 inhabitants per square kilometer, the average of the state (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). 32.3 percent of the residents of the district live in cities, while it is 38.6 percent on average Karnataka. The literacy rate is 76.3 percent close to the mean value of the state ( 76.1 percent).

The population of the district Davanagere provide Hindus according to the 2001 census, 85.6 percent majority. There is also a Muslim minority of 12.7 percent. The Indian census classified 11.7 percent of the district population as members of the tribal population (see Adivasi ). These are almost exclusively members of the tribe of Naikda.
