Haveri district

The district Haveri ( Kannada: ಹಾವೇರಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Council is based in the eponymous city of Haveri.

Geography

The district Haveri is located in the north-central Karnataka. Neighboring districts are Dharwad in north Gadag in the North East, Bellary in the east, in the southeast Davanagere, Shimoga, Uttara Kannada in the southwest and the west.

The area of ​​the district is 4,829 square kilometers. The district area is part of the Deccan Plateau and has an average elevation of 500 to 600 meters above sea level. Through the district flows the Varada, a tributary of the Tungabhadra. The Tungabhadra itself forms the South East border of the district Davanagere.

The district Haveri is divided into seven taluks Shiggaon, Savanur, Hangal, Haveri, Byadgi, Hirekerur and Ranibennur.

History

The district Haveri is as an independent district since 1997. Previously the area to Dharwad district had heard.

Population

According to the 2001 census, the district Haveri has 1,598,506 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 11.1 percent, slightly slower than in the central Karnataka ( 15.7 per cent). The population density is 331 inhabitants per square kilometer, close to the average of the state (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). 22.3 percent of the residents of the district Haveri live in cities. The degree of urbanization is thus lower than the average of Karnataka ( 38.6 per cent). The literacy ratio, which was 77.6 percent of the average for the state ( 75.6 percent).

The population of the district Haveri make Hindus according to the 2001 census, with 80.8 per cent majority. In addition, there is a greater Muslim minority of 17.6 percent. The census classified 8.8 percent of the population as members of the tribal population (see Adivasi ). These are almost exclusively members of the Naikda. In addition to Kannada, the main language of Karnataka, is among the Muslim population of the district Haveri, as in most parts of Karnataka, the spread Urdu. In the taluks Hangal, Savanur and Shiggaon the district Haveri Urdu has the status of a coordinate official language due to the high proportion of the population of its speakers.
