Savanur ( Kannada: ಸವಣೂರ Savaṇūra [ sʌʋʌɳu rʌ ː ] ) is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka with around 36,000 inhabitants ( 2001 census). Until 1948 Savanur was the capital of the princely state Savanur.

Savanur located in Haveri district in the north-central Karnataka at an altitude of around 590 meters above sea level on the Deccan plateau. The city is the capital of taluks (sub - district ) Savanur. The next largest cities are the capital district Haveri around 30 kilometers south and Hubli -Dharwad nearly 60 kilometers to the north. 10 km west of Savanur leads the National Highway 4 over. The Savanur station is eight kilometers east of the city.

Savanur was originally surrounded by a fortification, from the ruins still remain. On the outskirts Savanurs are three large baobab trees with trunk circumferences of 18, 16 and 14 meters. As this originally from Africa trees arrived in Savanur, is not clear. The local legend, they should have been introduced by Lord Krishna 5000 years ago.
