Gadag District

The district Gadag ( Kannada: ಗದಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Council is based in the eponymous city of Gadag.

Geography

The district Gadag is located in northern Karnataka. Neighboring districts are Dharwad in the West, Belgaum in the north east, the north Bagalkot, Koppal in the East, Bellary in the south east and Haveri in the southwest.

The area of ​​the district Gadag is 4,652 square kilometers. The district area is part of the Deccan Plateau and arises largely as a flat plateau with an average elevation of 600 to 700 meters above sea level dar. Southeast of the district area rise the Kappatagudda mountains that reach heights of up to 978 meters.

The district Gadag is divided into five taluks Nargund, Ron, Gadag, Shirhatti and Mundargi.

History

The district Gadag exists as a separate district since 1997. Previously the area to Dharwad district had heard.

Population

According to the 2001 census, the district Gadag has 1,065,235 inhabitants. This makes it one of the smaller districts of Karnataka. The population density is 229 inhabitants per square kilometer below the average of the state (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). Between 2001 and 2011, the population ( 15.7 percent ) grew by 9.6 percent, slower than the average of Karnataka. 35.7 percent of the residents of the district Gadag live in cities. The population of the district Gadag make Hindus according to the 2001 census, 84.9 percent majority. There is also a Muslim minority of 13.0 percent.
