Raichur district

The district Raichur ( Kannada: ರಾಯಚೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Council is based in the eponymous city of Raichur.

Geography

The district Raichur is located in the northeast of Karnataka on the border of the neighboring Federal State of Andhra Pradesh. Neighboring districts are in the south of Bellary, Koppal in the southwest, Bagalkot in the west, Bijapur in the northwest, Yadgir in the north ( all Karnataka ) and Andhra Pradesh Mahbubnagar and Kurnool in the northeast to the southeast.

The area of the district of Raichur is 8,442 square kilometers. The district area is part of the Deccan Plateau and is located at an altitude of 400 to 500 meters above sea level. The boundaries of the district form its main tributary Tungabhadra in the north of Krishna, one of the largest rivers in southern India, and in the south. The alluvial land between the two rivers is called the Doab of Raichur.

The district Raichur is divided into five taluks Lingsugur, Devadurga, Raichur, Manvi and Sindhnur.

History

The district Raichur was one of the districts of Hyderabad, a nominally independent princely state under British suzerainty during the British colonial period. 1853, the district Raichur was ceded to the British in 1860, but returned to Hyderabad. After the Indian independence in 1947 Hyderabad became part of India. In 1956, the Indian states were reorganized by the States Reorganisation Act by the language barrier. The district Raichur came here together with the south-west of Hyderabad to kannadasprachigen State Mysore (1973 renamed Karnataka ). The eastern Taluk Alampur but was removed because of its predominantly Telugu -speaking population and the district Mahbubnagar of Andhra Pradesh slammed. In 1998, the district Raichur reduced further than the District Koppal was formed from its western parts.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, the district Raichur has 1,924,773 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011, the population so that approximately the same extent as in the middle of Karnataka ( 15.7 per cent) grew by 15.3 percent. The population density is of 228 inhabitants per square kilometer below the average of the state (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). 25.3 percent of the residents of the district live in cities. The proportion of urban population is lower than the mean of the state ( 38.6 percent). The literacy rate is well below average: Only 60.5 percent of the residents of the district Raichur can read and write, while there are 76.1 per cent on average of Karnataka.

The population of the district Raichur place after the 2001 census, Hindus 84.9 percent majority. There is also a Muslim minority of 13.7 percent. Besides Kannada, the main language of Karnataka are in the district of Raichur and Urdu, which is spoken as in most parts of Karnataka by the Muslims, and Telugu, the language of the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh spread. The Urdu has Taluk in Raichur District Raichur due to the high proportion of the population of its speakers the status of a coordinate official language.
