Ramanagar district

The district Ramanagara ( Kannada: ರಾಮನಗರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ, also: Ramanagaram, Ramanagar ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Administrative center is the eponymous City Ramanagara.

Geography

The district Ramanagara is located in southeastern Karnataka southwest of the capital Bangalore (Bengaluru ). Neighboring Chamarajanagar districts are in the south, in the west Mandya, Tumkur in the northwest, Bangalore Rural and Bangalore Urban in the northeast and Krishnagiri in the east. The latter already belongs to the neighboring federal state of Tamil Nadu.

The area of the district of Ramanagara is 3,573 square kilometers. This makes it one of the smallest districts of Karnataka. The district area belongs to the southern part of the Deccan Plateau and consists of a plateau with an average altitude of 600 to 900 meters above sea level. The landscape is crossed by single granite rock. The spectacular rock formations Ramanagaras served as the location for numerous films such as the Hindi classic Sholay or the film version of A Passage to India. In contrast to the neighboring district of Bangalore Urban, Bangalore is largely urbanized, the strong growth, the district Ramanagara is rural.

The district Ramanagara is divided into the four taluks Ramanagara, Channapatna, Kanakapura and Magadi.

History

The district was originally part of the district of Ramanagara Bangalore. This was one of the districts of the Princely State of Mysore during the British colonial period. After the independence of India Mysore took place in 1949 following the Indian Union. 1956, the district had to the Bangalore to the language boundaries of the new State of Mysore Kannada (1973 renamed Karnataka ). 1986, the former district of Bangalore was divided into the districts of Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural. Then in 2007 split the southwestern part of the district of Bangalore Rural district as an independent Ramanagara from.

Population

According to the 2011 census, the district Ramanagara has 1,082,739 inhabitants. The population density is 303 inhabitants per square kilometer somewhat below the average of the state (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). 24.7 percent of the residents of the district Ramanagara live in cities. The degree of urbanization is below the average of Karnataka ( 38.6 per cent). While the metropolitan Bangalore experiences a significant population growth, the growth rate in the rural district of Ramanagara is lower, at 5.1 percent 2001-2011 than the average of Karnataka ( 15.7 per cent). The literacy rate is 69.2 percent, well below the mean of the state ( 75.6 percent).
