Dave Bailey (musician)

Samuel David "Dave" Bailey ( born February 22, 1926 in Portsmouth, Virginia) is an American jazz drummer.

Life

Dave Bailey grew up in Philadelphia and went in 1947 to New York City where he studied at the Music Center Conservatory. He played with Herbie Jones 1951-53, after which, inter alia, with Johnny Hodges, Lou Donaldson, Charles Mingus and Horace Silver. From 1955 to 1960 he worked preferably with Gerry Mulligan and came with him four times to Europe. Bailey also played with Ben Webster 1958, Curtis Fuller in 1959, with Billy Taylor and the end of 1959 was a founding member of the Art Farmer / Benny Golson Jazztet, but dropped out before the first recording session and was replaced by Lex Humphries. In 1960 he was one of the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band and initiated with Fred Norsworthy and Duke Pearson, the short-lived label Jazz Time Records, on which his LPs Reaching Out with Kenny Dorham and Bash, Curtis Fuller and Tommy Flanagan appeared.

Furthermore, Bailey played with Bob Brookmeyer, Kenny Dorham, Lee Konitz, Cal Tjader and Roger Kellaway plates a. 1957 and 1958 he was at the Newport Jazz Festival, and also appears in the there documentary film Jazz on a Summer 's Day. He went with Jazz at the Philharmonic on tour and worked primarily as a teacher and concert organizer.
