Dave Brock

David Anthony " Dave" Brock ( born August 20, 1941 in Isleworth, Middlesex, England) is an English musician (guitar, bass, synthesizer, vocals) and songwriter. He is best known as the founder and only constant member of the space rock band Hawkwind.

Biography

Born in Islewood, Brock grew up in Feltham. At age 12 he got from his uncle, a banjo, and later by his parents a guitar. In 1959 he graduated from the school. After a few jobs Brock worked in an animation studio. He spent the evenings in clubs like the Crawdaddy or the Eel Pie Iceland, where jazz and blues was played. Prior to the clubs he played with friends, including Eric Clapton, Keith Relf and Mick Slattery.

Together with pianist Mike King and the harmonica player Luke Francis, he formed the trio "Dharma Blues Band " in 1966 Dealing with the Devil by Sonny Boy Williamson II and Roll Em Pete by Pete Johnson for the album Blues Anytime Vol 2 (Immediate, IMPC015) recorded. The group also accompanied American blues musicians, such as Memphis Slim and Champion Jack Dupree. After Brock's departure, the Dharma Blues Band in 1967 recorded an album.

Brock tingelte busking through Europe. With Pete Judd ( harmonica) and John Illingworth (guitar) in 1967, he formed the trio "The Famous Cure ". In the Netherlands, they made some shots. With Mick Slattery instead of Judd they played the single Sweet Mary / Mean Mistreater who made ​​it to the Netherlands to No. 5.

Again, as a street musician on the go, Brock joined a band that toured through Great Britain in a double-decker bus, occurred at the Royal Albert Hall and the album The Buskers ( Columbia SX6356 ) the song Bring It on Home contributed.

Hawkwind

In 1969, at Brock and Slattery around a band that should be known by the name Hawkwind. For the first lineup also included bassist John Harrison, the drummer Terry Ollis, the keyboard player Dik Mik and saxophonist Nik Turner.

Brock was the only constant member of the band whose occupation changed frequently. He also wrote most of the music, the lyrics are often originated by others, such as the poets Robert Calvert and Michael Moorcock.
