Nik Turner

Nik Turner ( born August 26, 1940 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England as Nicholas Turner) is an English musician (saxophone, flute, vocals) and songwriter. He was known primarily as a member of space rock band Hawkwind.

Biography

Born in Oxford, drew Turner at the age of 13 years with his family to Margate in Kent. In summer jobs, he became friends with Robert Calvert. After completing his education he went for a short time for merchant navy. He then traveled through Europe, funded by doing odd jobs. In Haarlem he met Dave Brock know. In Berlin rave Turner for the free jazz. In the early 1960s he had saxophone and flute lessons and occasionally played in his brother's band, but only now he felt ready to play " in a rock band free jazz ".

1969-76 and 1982-84: Hawkwind

Brock founded in 1969 Hawkwind, and Turner, who owned a van, first worked as a roadie for the group. Because of his passion for the saxophone but he was included in the band soon. He brought more members to the group, including Calvert.

Turner wrote some of their best known songs, such as Brainstorm and Master of the Universe for Hawkwind. In 1976 he was, however, thrown by Brock from the band.

1977-86: Sphynx and Inner City Unit

After the first departure of Hawkwind Turner received permission to make in the King's Chamber of the Great Pyramid of Cheops three hours flute recordings during a holiday in Egypt. Back in England, Steve Hillage revised the tapes. There was a group called Sphynx together to record an accompaniment to the flute recordings. The group included Alan Powell of Hawkwind, Mike Howlett and Tim Blake of Gong and Harry Williamson. Turner texts written by the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The result was published in 1978 as Xitintoday at Charisma Records. Sphynx played at major festivals, including the Deeply Vale Festival (recordings of which later appeared on CD) and the Glastonbury Festival ( partially taken up by the BBC and broadcast.) They also had their own festival "Bohemian Love-In " at the Roundhouse.

With Williamson and Sting Turner took the 1978 protest song on Nuclear Waste; the band was called "Radio Actors ". As a guest musician he supported the band "Mother Gong " during the recording of their album Fairy Tales ( 1979). With some of the musicians involved Turner founded the group Inner City Unit ( ICU), which brought out two albums in 1980 and 1981 Pass Out Maximum Effect, before Turner mitmachte again with Hawkwind. After his second departure from Hawkwind, he revived ICU again. It appeared in 1985 two more albums, New Anatomy and The President tapes, as well as the EP Blood and Bone.

1987 to today

This period is characterized by numerous projects with fellow musicians.
