Roundhouse (venue)

The Roundhouse is a famous venue for rock music concerts in London. It is located in Camden near the metro station Chalk Farm.

History

It has its name roundhouse of his former role: It was built in 1847 as a roundhouse for the London and North Western Railway. Already in the 1860s, however, it was too small for become longer locomotives and then served as a storage room. After the Greater London Authority had the building in 1966 released for art events, the opening concert with Pink Floyd took place on 15 October of the year.

Have played here all the English psychedelic rock bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s with rank and name: Soft Machine, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Man and the early David Bowie. Also German groups like Amon Düül and Kraftwerk and American groups like the Doors or Jimi Hendrix performed here. After a concert of the Ramones in July 1976, the venue was at the same time as the birthplace of the English punk movement.

In the Roundhouse not only music concerts took place, but also ballet and theater performances, for example of pieces of the legendary Living Theatre and Andy Warhol.

In 1983 the Round House was closed. After a long vacancy, it was renovated and opened as a cultural and event center again on 1 June 2006. Since 2009 takes place here every year, the iTunes Festival.
