David Hare (playwright)

David Hare ( born June 5, 1947, in Sussex ) is a British playwright and screenwriter.

Hare wrote and published since the early 1970s, plays with mostly socio-political content. His first screenplay was filmed in 1973 for British television. Even as a film director, he tried several times since 1974. His most famous film as writer and director is the drama Wetherby in 1985 with Vanessa Redgrave, Ian Holm and Judi Dench in the lead roles. The film won the Berlinale Golden Bear in 1985.

His most famous screenplay he wrote for the film The Hours, which was based on the novel by Michael Cunningham. For this he received his first Oscar nomination. He received another nomination in 2009 for the adaptation of Bernhard Schlink's novel The Reader.

As a playwright Hare was nominated 1983-1997 three-time Tony Award.

David Hare was married from 1970 to 1980 with the film producer Margaret Matheson. From this marriage he is the father of three children. Since 1992, he is married to the French fashion designer Nicole Farhi. He lives in London.
