David Neuberger, Baron Neuberger of Abbotsbury

David Edmond Neuberger, Baron Neuberger of Abbotsbury, PC, ( born January 10, 1948) is a British lawyer. He was from 2009 to 2012 Master of the Rolls, the second most senior judge in England and Wales and previously a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary. In July 2012, his appointment was announced as the President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom on 1 October 2012.

Family

Neuberger is the son of Albert Neuberger, professor of chemical pathology at St Mary's Hospital, University of London, and his wife Lilian. His uncle was the Rabbi Herman N. Neuberger. Neuberger brothers pitched a scientific career. James is Professor of Medicine at the University of Birmingham, Michael is Professor of Molecular Immunology at the University of Cambridge and Anthony Professor of Finance at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick.

Neuberger married in 1976 Angela Holdsworth, a television producer and writer. They have three children, a daughter and two sons, who are all lawyers.

Life

David Neuberger attended the private Westminster School, Westminster Abbey, and studied chemistry at Christ Church College, University of Oxford. After his graduation he worked from 1970 to 1973 at the commercial bank NM Rothschild & Sons.

1974 Neuberger has been approved by the Law Society of Lincoln's Inn. He was an Associate Justice ( Bencher ) and 1987 Attorney-General in 1993. From 1990 to 1996 he was recorder, then he became a judge in the Chancery Division, and he was appointed a Knight Bachelor. He was Supervisory Chancery Judge of Midland, Wales and Chester, as well as of the Western Circuits 2001. This office he held until 2004 when he was promoted to Lord Justice of Appeal and a member of the Privy Council.

He was from 2004 to 2007 one of the leaders (Joint Head ) of the Falcon chambers. From 2006 to 2007, he led a study for the entry requirements to the chamber. He also belonged to the Panel on Fair Access to the Professions, which was led by former Health Secretary Alan Milburn.

Membership in the House of Lords

On 11 January 2007 he succeeded Donald Nicholls, Baron Nicholls of Birkenhead appointed as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and became the life peer as Baron Neuberger of Abbotsbury, Abbotsbury in the County of Dorset and of the January 15, 2007 between Thomas Henry Bingham and his sister Julia Neuberger officially introduced into the House of Lords. His rise to the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords is one of the fastest in the recent times. Although Patrick Devlin, Baron Devlin was younger when he was appointed in 1960 at the age of 55 years, Neuberger was against the current youngest Law Lord.

At a meeting of days he was occasionally present, never spoke up and took part in a single vote.

On July 23, 2009, it was announced that he will be appointed Master of the Rolls, was the successor of Anthony Clarke, Baron Clarke of Stone -cum- Ebony, one of the founding judges of the Supreme Court. This appointment was effective on the 1st October 2009. As a senior Lord he is excluded from participation since 2009.

In May 2010, Neuberger was a controversial minority decision known to the trade union Unite is not consistent with the voting rules in accordance with the legislation on trade unions in line. In July 2010, he decided that peace activists would have cleared in Parliament Square after they lost on appeal.

Other offices and honors

1997 Neuberger Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Advisory Committee on spoilation of Art falling on the Holocaust and in 2003 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Trust was Schizophrenia. In 2000 he was Director ( Governor ) of the University of the Arts London. Since 2009 he has Advisory Board ( Advisory Council ) of the National Archives and the Magna Carta Trust.

2008 Neuberger Honorary Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
