David Nickson, Baron Nickson
David Wigley Nickson, Baron Nickson, of Renagour in the District of Stirling KBE FRSE DL ( born November 27, 1929) is a British manager who is since 1994 member of the House of Lords.
Life
Military service and career
After schooling made Nickson 1949-1954 his military service in the Coldstream Guards, and then began his professional career with the publisher William Collins & Sons, where he worked as Director 1959-1976. Subsequently, he was between 1976 and 1983 Vice - Chairman of the publisher and in addition from 1981 to 1985 director of Radio Clyde Ltd.. During this time he became in 1971 director of the insurer General Accident and held this post until 1998. During this time he was active 1974-1979 as a member of the advisory Board for Industrial Development in Scotland from 1979 to 1981 as Chairman of the Employers' Association Confederation of British Industry (CBI ) for Scotland and also was 1979-1991 Member of the Scottish economic Council (Scottish economy Council).
Nickson, who in 1981 became Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE ) and in 1982 Deputy Lieutenant of the Lieutenancy Area Stirling and Falkirk, joined in 1981 as a Director in the beverage company Scottish & Newcastle and was there first since 1982 Vice - Chairman of the Board and, most recently from 1983 to 1989, Chairman of the Board.
Besides his work with Scottish & Newcastle 1981, he was director of Clydesdale Bank, the Vice - Chairman in 1990 and most recently was CEO from 1991 to 1998. In addition, he was from 1981 to 1994 director of Edinburgh Investment Trust plc, 1983-1985 Chairman of the Countryside Commission of Scotland, between 1988 and 1998 from Hambros plc and 1991-1996 National Australia Bank.

1985 Nickson was the 1987 Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a member of the National Economic Development Council ( National Economic Development Council ) and was one of this body until 1988. After that, he was from 1988 to 1995 chairman of the Foundation for the Atlantic salmon ( Atlantic Salmon Trust). For his services Nickson was, who was president of the employers' organization CBI between 1986 and 1988, 1987 Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE ) and henceforth led the suffix " Sir ".
In addition, he served between 1989 and 1995 as Chairman of the Monitoring Panel on wages of older workers (Senior Salaries Review Body ) from 1989 to 1991 as Chairman of the Scottish Development Agency ( Scottish Development Agency) from 1990 to 1993 as chairman of the Association of Scottish companies (Scottish Enterprise ) and then from 1993 to 1998 as Vice - Chairman of the Board of the insurer General Accident plc.
Nickson, who was from 1993 to 2002 the first Chancellor of the newly formed Glasgow Caledonian University, an honorary doctorate from the University of Stirling, Edinburgh Napier University, the University of the West of Scotland and Glasgow Caledonian University.
On March 22, 1994, he was raised by a Letters Patent as a life peer with the title Baron of Renagour in the District of Stirling to the peerage. On 4 May 1994 his Introduction ( Introduction) followed as a member of the House of Lords. In the House of Lords he belongs to the group of non-Party, the so-called cross benchers.
Lord Nickson, who was 1996-2011 President of the Scottish salmon fishing associations ( Association of Scottish Salmon Fishing Boards) and captain of the Royal Company of Archers, 1997 also of the Task Force of Scotland minister of Scottish salmon served on and was also vice - Lord Lieutenant of Stirling and Selkirk.
