David Sanborn

David William Sanborn ( born July 30, 1945 in Tampa, Florida) is an American saxophonist who has emerged especially in the field of popular music of smooth jazz, R & B and blues. The jazz journalist Scott Yanow has Sanborn referred to as " the most influential saxophonist on pop, R & B, and crossover players of the past 20 years".

Life and work

With three years he contracted polio. As a therapy, he began playing alto saxophone. Since he grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, he was decisive inspired by Chicago blues musicians. During his high school years he played with musicians such as Albert King and Little Milton. First, he spent a year studying at Northwestern University (1963 /64) before 1965 on the University of Iowa joined, where he continued his studies until 1967. At 20 he married. In 1967 he moved to the West Coast, where he played until 1971 at the Butterfield Blues band Paul Butterfield; then he worked with Stevie Wonder. Since 1973 he also played in the Gil Evans Orchestra, as soloist, among others, in The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix (1974 ), There Comes a Time (1975) and Priestess (1977).

His first solo album, Taking Off, Sanborn took on in 1975. In the 1980s, he became known for his album Hideaway. He played among others with Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Tommy Bolin, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Steve Gadd, Nena and Miles Davis. Several of his albums have won Grammy Awards.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Sanborn had his own radio show ( The Jazz Show with David Sanborn ). He is the father of Jonathan Sanborn, which he devotes all of his albums.
