David Triesman, Baron Triesman

David Maxim Triesman, Baron Triesman, of Tottenham in the London Borough of Haringey ( born October 30, 1943 in London ) is a British Labour Party politician, who among other things also the Chairman of the leading English Football Association The Football Association and was a member since 2004 House of Lords.

Life

Studies, career and trade union official

Triesman, who is descended from Belarusian- French Jewish parents, graduated after attending the Stationers ' Company 's School to study at the University of Essex, from which he was excluded in 1968 for participating in a protest rally against a scientist of the defense industry. He then continued his studies at King's College, University of Cambridge.

After he joined in 1960 as a teenager, the Labour Party, he was at that time a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain before 1977 he again joined the Labour Party.

For several years he worked as a lecturer at the London South Bank University ( LSBU ) and was active as a trade unionist next. In addition, he was from 1980 to 1983 member of the committee of the Ministry of the Interior (Home Office ) for education in prisons and 1981-1986 member of the Authority for workers in Greater London. In 1984 he became full-time functionary of the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education ( NATFHE ) and served 1985-1986 as Chairman of the teacher committees in Burnham.

In 1993, Triesman as general secretary to the union of university teachers ( Association of University Teachers, AUT ) and held this position until 2001. In addition, he was from 1998 to 1999 a member of a commission of inquiry into higher education, and between 1999 and 2002 Member of the Board of Ruskin College. In addition, he served from 2000 to 2001 as a member of a working group on better regulations and between 2000 and 2002 as a member of a circle of the Treasury for the productivity of the public service.

General Secretary of the Labour Party and the House of Lords member

He succeeded by Margaret McDonagh Secretary General of the Labour Party in 2001 and held that post until his replacement by Matt Carter, 2003.

On 12 January 2004 Triesman was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Triesman, of Tottenham in the London Borough of Haringey in the peerage and has since been a member of the House of Lords.

During his membership in the House of Lords, he was initially between 2004 and 2005 Parliamentary Secretary ( Whip ) of the Labour Group, and at the same time spokesman for education, skills, trade, industry, transport and international development. At the same time he was carrying, between June 2004 and May 2005 the title of Lord in Waiting to her HM Household.

In May 2005 Lord Triesman was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Commonwealth of Nations called. After that, he was responsible from June 2007 to January 2008 Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills and there for intellectual property and quality.

After leaving the government, he followed in 2008 by Geoff Thompson as chairman of the Football Association, The Football Association. He held this position until his replacement by David Bernstein in 2010 and was in that office at the same time to 2010 for England, however, unsuccessful applications responsible for hosting the football World Cup in 2018 and 2022.

In 2010, Lord Triesman after the defeat of the Labour Party at the general election on 6 May 2010 opposition spokesman for Business, Innovation and Skills. Since 2011 he is the spokesman of the Labour Group in the House of Lords for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of Nations.
