David Viñas

David Viñas ( born July 28, 1927 in Buenos Aires, † March 10, 2011 ) was an Argentine literary scholar and writer.

Life

Viñas studied literature at the Universidad de Buenos Aires ( UBA) and was able to successfully complete this study with a PhD. Together with fellow students, he founded in 1953 the literary magazine " Cotorno " and in this he could - until its last appearance in 1959 - publishing his early literary works.

Politically interested and engaged Viñas was set rather anti- Peronist, and later he was found in the leadership of Trotskyist aligned Movimiento de Liberación Nacional. As in 1976, the junta coup led by General Jorge Rafael Videla to power, Viñas went into exile in Europe. His two children, María Adelaida and Lorenzo Ishmael remained in Argentina; they were kidnapped by the secret police and disappeared forever.

Between 1976 and 1983 Viñas lived in Spain and for some time in Berlin. As was to democracy with President Raúl Alfonsín Argentina again, he returned after a stay in Mexico City back to his home town.

In 1986, Viñas a reputation as a professor of Argentine literature at the UBA. As such, he headed there for many years, the Instituto de Literatura Argentina.

He died on 10 March 2011 at the age of 83 years in Buenos Aires.
